Switching Magento developer?

Four signs it's time to move agency, and how we make the switch smooth.

Sound familiar?

I've lost confidence in my agency's capability

Feeling like you’ve lost confidence in the work that’s being done? Not sure you’d recommend them? Web development is complex, there’s no two ways about it. So it’s not surprising that agencies often end up letting down their clients, especially if they’ve promised a solution on a platform they don’t specialise in. Agencies that build on Shopify, BigCommerce, WordPress and Magento alike often don’t have the depth of experience or the qualifications to solve harder technical challenges.

I want more innovation and ideas

“You’re meant to be the eCommerce experts, you should be telling me!” Not getting suggestions or insights on how to improve things? Developers just saying “yes” and not challenging you on other ways to solve your requests? An eCommerce agency should be at the cutting edge of retail, leading with qualified ideas on increasing conversion rates, growing traffic and making your operations more efficient.

I want better communication

Wish your agency were more local and that you had more face-to-face contact? Want someone to talk to you in plain, straight-talking English for once? If your agency isn’t available when you need them, dodging your calls and replying days after you contact them, then something’s amiss, and your agency may not value your business as much as you’d want them to.

We've outgrown them, they aren't the right fit for us any more

Slow progress? Missing out on commercial opportunities? Suspect they don’t have a big enough team? If the development work is outsourced to freelancers or a global team, and the quality isn’t there and the work isn’t moving quickly enough, then it could be time to move on.

Our no lock-in guarantee

If, for whatever reason, you ever decide to stop working with us and move to someone else, we promise to help you transfer your code, media and data to your new Magento partner, and we won’t charge you for it. This keeps us putting your interests first, keeps the relationship a real partnership, and keeps us on our toes.

Talk to us about switching

Your hosting, your choice

Switching agency doesn’t have to mean switching hosting. Whoever looks after your servers, every site we work on gets the same way of working: version-controlled development, automated releases that can be rolled back, and backups, assisted by AI tooling.

We manage it

Your site runs on hosting we set up and look after, with daily backups, security patches, a firewall and performance monitoring included.

Your hosting company manages it

We work alongside them, and they keep looking after the servers.

You manage it

Your own team keeps control of the servers, and we look after the site.

How switching to magic42 works

Switching typically takes around four weeks, but the exact time depends on your business. Sites with more complex integrations need more thorough testing before launch.

Assess

We review how your site and current hosting perform, and plan the right home for it. You give us access to your code, database and media, and we meet you face to face to introduce your point of contact and set up the project board where you’ll see every task and its progress.

Prepare

We put all of your site’s code into GitHub, so every change is recorded and any change can be undone. We build a separate staging copy of your site, so new work is tested there before it goes anywhere near your customers. Then we automate your releases: updates go live in one step, the same way every time, and if something isn’t right they can be rolled back in minutes.

Test

We set up monitoring that alerts us if your site slows down or stops responding, often before you or your customers notice. Then we test the whole site with you from end to end, including checkout and every integration.

Launch

On switch day, we agree a plan with you to make sure no orders placed during the move are lost, and that everything you rely on carries over. We point your domain at the new hosting, launch, and keep a close eye on performance in the days after.

Why switch to magic42?

Magento specialists

We love Magento. We believe it’s the most mature eCommerce platform, with fantastic out-of-the-box features, a huge community behind it and no vendor lock-in. As Hyvä Silver Partners, we also build fast, modern Magento storefronts. Our development-led culture means we act as an extension of your in-house team, leaving you free to focus on your business.

A professional approach

We know how hard it can be to find the right eCommerce development partner, and how easy it is to get your fingers burned. We invest heavily in our team’s Magento, Google and project management qualifications, to raise the quality of our work and get you the best return on your investment. You get a single point of contact, a regular prioritisation call, and clear monthly time reports.

A UK team you can talk to

Our 20-strong team is based in Birmingham and works in UK hours, and our clients value the regular face-to-face contact they get with us. You’ll speak to the people doing the work, in plain English.

Born from retail, built for growth

We’re at the forefront of eCommerce thinking, with hands-on experience of running B2C and B2B Magento websites. magic42 grew out of an award-winning online retailer founded in 2000, so we’ve had to innovate to beat the competition, and we’ll work with you to do the same. Our team uses a range of analytics tools to understand what your customers need, and partners with you on a roadmap for growth.

magic42 took control of our Magento website from another agency, to what we all thought would be an easy process and simply get it over the line. However, after they did their assessment we discovered there was much more work which needed to be done in order to make the site live. All issues post going live have also been rectified. The use of an easy to use job board, we can set tasks and see what the progress is. I would highly recommend.

Switching agency: your questions answered

It depends on your business. Most onboarding projects take around four weeks. Sites with more complex integrations, such as an ERP or warehouse system, need more thorough testing before launch, so they can take longer. We’ll give you a plan with timings after the assessment.
We aim to keep disruption to a minimum. On the day of the switch, we agree a process with you to capture any orders placed during the move, while protecting the integrity of your systems, so nothing is lost and everything you need carries over to the new way of working with us.
No. We can manage your hosting, work alongside your current hosting company, or work with your own team. Either way, your site gets version-controlled development, automated releases that can be rolled back, and backups.
That’s what the assessment is for. If we find your site is behind on Magento updates, has had its core code changed, or has security issues, we’ll explain what we’ve found and give you a separate plan and estimate before any work starts.
You’ll have a single point of contact at magic42, a regular call to agree priorities, and a project board where you can set tasks and follow their progress.
Our no lock-in guarantee means we’ll help you move your code, media and data to your new partner, free of charge.
