What a typical year looks like for Magento updates

Magento is an eCommerce platform that continues to innovate and expand its features and security for both retailers and brands around the world.

No platform should become stale and Magento constantly evolve improving what it offers out of the box as well as match the market demands for ever changing technologies.

As part of our Magento development with our clients, we are often asked how regular Magento release improvements and security patches.

While there is no guarantee from historical patterns, there is certainly a strong indicator to the timing.

Magento official releases in a timeline

We have put together this graph to help our clients understand what a typical year in the life of Magento 2 updates might look like by mapping from September 2017 to July 2019. This has helped our clients to budget time in the future for expected improvements.

Here is the timeline so you can quickly identify a couple of different types of updates on Magento: Minor updates (2.3.1) and Major updates (2.2).

These updates include a mixture of different features, security patches and updates. It is important to keep your version of Magento on the latest available whilst also ensuring and testing that it won’t cause any conflicts with your current setup and extensions.

That’s a fundamental process we go through with our own clients to ensure everything is up-to-date and functioning as it should.

If you wish to see previous updates, you can view the official Magento log and release notes between versions - providing a deep dive into exactly what each release brings to the platform.

The updates to Magento 2 typically include approximately 250 updates - covering performance, additional features, new partners and integrations, as well as bug fixes and security patches.

Magento updates, built for secure growth

One of the benefits of Magento is it features a huge proactive community and owner (in Adobe) who deeply value security. Being a platform capable of driving enterprise size businesses, It's hard to deny their benefits over their competitors.

It’s understandable why these Magento updates can be seen as a burden to clients, requiring time and ultimately money to apply while factoring in the dependencies between updates, extensions and bespoke work also needs to be mapped out.

Although there are common Magento setups, each site is ultimately unique, meaning time to complete an update will also be different per client.

Through all of this, the objective is clear: to maintain and improve your Magento site with all the benefits that will come your way with these updates.

Ultimately it’s only a positive resolution, especially when we think about the security and performance benefits it brings.

Support for your Magento website

As your business grows, it’s key for your platform to grow with it - that’s why we are passionate about building and maintaining fast and secure Magento websites.

If you need support with updating your Magento build, or would like to start a new project then get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
